We are a tight team here at Glacier. Like one of our crew members said, “We really are a family here.”
And it’s true.
Our seasons are short, but they are intense. We really do spend an inordinate amount of time together.
From the drivers to the office, everyone here at Glacier Raft Company plays an important role in ensuring all our guests are out having a great day on the river. Each one of us has certain responsibilities that force us to live out different parts of the day. So, inevitably, we all have features of the day we enjoy more than others.
Whether it’s eating lunch out by the river or seeing a guest return from their experience on the water, we all have certain highlights of our day that allow us to look back on the summer to be thankful about the "work" we do during the season.
GETTING OUT ON THE RIVER
“It’s hard to pick one favourite part of the day,” says Glacier Raft Company owner Ryan Johannesen. “Being on the water never really gets old. It’s always a lot of fun.”
Many of our guides love being surrounded by nature. Plus, the thrill of white water hardly ever gets old. “Best part of the day is going through Portage and Shotgun for sure… it’s the biggest rapid on the river, and almost a kilometer long,” explains raft guide Lawrence Brennan. “ It’s Class IV, great white water. People usually get a little exited there.”
Kris King, another guide, agrees wholeheartedly.
“Ahh, the rush right before entering Portage and Shotgun rapid. Everyone is super stoked. They have all practiced paddling and the safety, and the thunder of the rapid is right in front of us. That whole anticipation is something that gets me stoked every single day.”
But for some of us, it’s not necessarily the rushing water that gets us excited about the day.
We all love to eat, especially hungry raft guides.
“Hands down, lunch. Lunch is my favourite part of the day,” says Brennan with one giant smile.
And he’s not even kidding.
With a buffet-style lunch that features five different salads, a variety of main course options (including steak!), snacks, chips and cookies, eating food outside in nature alongside the river sure can be a highlight.
Plus, when you’ve been outside on the river in the sun for a couple of hours, that bottomless meal sure seems appealing.
For those of us who do not necessarily get the chance to get out on the river all the time, the happiness that comes from guests is usually one of the best parts of the day.
“My favourite part of the day is when everyone gets back,” says office staff member Angela Lanno. “They are all just so stoked. The atmosphere in the room and the environment is so awesome. I love being around that kind of positivity.”
It’s not only when guests get back, but also when they first arrive to the base, as Ike Michele is quick to point out: “The most exciting thing that ever happens to me throughout the day is if somebody remembers talking to me on the phone.”
“Because I usually remember everyone who comes in. So it’s the best thing when you’ve had a conversation with somebody and they remember who you are.”
It truly is the small things that make or break a day!
But for many of us, it’s the beer and CHEERS! at the end of every trip by the fire that many of our team members enjoy every day.
“At the end of the trip, we have everyone out back by the fire and we give them a drink and we cheers to the day and for coming out,” says owner Carmen Narancsik. “It’s a great chance for everyone to chat with each other and to chat with the staff. It’s just a very fun, laid back time and a nice wrap-up to the day.”
Although every crew member has a different highlight of their day at Glacier, each work day is always fun and entertaining. It’s why the majority of us return year after year, and why we have become more like a family than anything else.
We sure do love the river, and we want to share it with you!
As Carmen once said, “Our team really loves what they do... They are very passionate about it and very excited, so it makes people feel very excited too.”
Cheers to that!
