If you’re ever wondering why Golden, British Columbia should be a destination on your list, we can assure you the opportunities for adventure tourism are endless!
Whether you’re looking for a high intensity, adrenaline pumping activity, or the more scenic, relaxing, exploratory type, Golden has it all.
Not only is it the gateway to amazing adventures in all directions, it's located between the Purcell and Rocky Mountains, in the heart of six National Parks, which means the scenery is absolutely stunning.
The Columbia River and Kicking Horse River both flow through Golden, so the relaxing sound of running water can be added to its list of wonderful qualities.
Here are our recommendations for the 5 Best Adventure Tourism Activities you should come and experience.
We honestly don’t think you could find a more spectacular spot to jump from a plane. 360 degrees of huge mountain peaks makes the view almost as amazing as the jump itself.
With the Rockies to the east, the Selkirks to the west and the Purcells right below, the panoramic view of peaks and valleys is beyond impressive.
And that’s only the beginning – falling from 12 500 feet provides a rush like no other!
All jumps are tandem, so think about this. Before you jump your jump master will be sitting on the edge of the plane giving you the countdown. If they're sitting on the very edge, what does that mean for you?
You're sitting on nothing! You're hanging out of a plane at 12 500 feet. Terrifying and EXHILARATING!
Last season we took our whole crew rafting as a thank you to finish off the season. There were some nerves for sure, but at the end of the day the smiles were HUGE and there definitely weren't any regrets. If you're able to skydive while you're in Golden, we can almost guarantee you'll be happy you did!
Photo and video packages are also available to purchase. While it does add a bit to the price, we think it's an amazing memory to have, and who knows when you'll be skydiving again. Not to mention you'll probably see your face in hilarious poses you didn't even know were possible. Falling that fast isn't always the most flattering. Ha!
If you'd like to combine your jump with another activity in Golden, raft and skydive packages are available and you can learn more HERE.
Have you ever had a dream where you were flying? Where you raise your arms and you effortlessly take off, floating through the air. That's what paragliding is like!
Mount 7 in Golden is one of the best spots in the world for paragliding. The wind currents in the valley create great flying conditions and it’s from this spot that the world record was set for the longest flight (don't worry, all jumps are tandem so you won't end up down in the States unprepared).
We feel like paragliding is the closest feeling you can get to flying (who doesn't want to be able to fly!) and we think it's an experience everyone should have at least once.
You'll be floating over the beautiful Columbia Wetlands so the views are stunning and you'll land in a big grassy field just south of town.
Coasting through the air, weightless and calm – it’s a very cool feeling!
The Golden Golf Club is a bit of a lesser known attraction here – but likely not for long. It was awarded the PGAs #1 Hidden Gem Award last year so word is getting out.
Experience a world class golf experience, and enjoy 18 holes, while taking in the spectacular view of the surrounding mountain peaks and the Columbia River which flows right through the course.
The Golf Club offers a number of promotions, from Alberta Days and Introductory Golf Memberships, to All You Can Play - Everyday. It's worth taking a look at their website before booking your tee off time.
If you'd like to combine your day of golf with another activity in Golden, raft and golf packages are available and you can learn more HERE.
If speed is your thing, an ATV tour around the mountainside might be just what you’re looking for.
Drive yourself up to a lookout for a great view of the town and valley below. You can make it a full day affair if you’re keen to explore, or kick up some dirt for a couple of hours if you’re on more of a time crunch.
If you'd like to combine your ATVing with another activity in Golden, raft and ATV packages are available and you can learn more HERE.
We’ll finish with what we know best. It’s true that we may have a slight bias, but the Kicking Horse River is renowned for a reason. With some of the best white water in Western Canada, it’s a great opportunity for first timers and seasoned rafters alike.
With five trips to choose from, there is definitely something for everyone.
From the Family Adventure which rafts the calm, upper canyon, to the Ultimate Heli Adventure which rafts all three sections of the river (including lots of big, continuous class 3 and 4 rapids), Glacier Raft Company can help you find the perfect rafting adventure.
To get a taste of what rafting the Kicking Horse will be all about, watch this drone video. It shows all three sections of the river (the upper, middle and lower canyons), which will hopefully help you get a better sense of how much you'd like to experience.
No experience is required for any of the trips as our highly experienced guides will let you know exactly what you need to do.
It’s difficult to pick only 5 when we could probably have a list of 25, but come to Golden and create your own ideal adventure.
You could consider horseback riding, hiking, fishing, cross country mountain biking, downhill mountain biking, trail running, Via Ferrata, the Grizzly Bear Refuge, camping or visiting the 6 surrounding National Parks.
If you're undecided on Golden think mountains, forests, rivers, sunsets, solitude and grand adventures. If you make the trip we think you'll love it as much as we do!
Cheers from all of us here at Glacier
